Getting Started with Disney Infinity: Starter Packs

Chances are good that if you have a child, they will you to buy Disney Infinity for them.  If you have no idea what that is or you kind of know what it is but need a little more information, you've come to the right place.  I built this site to for parents and grandparents that need a little help figuring out Disney Infinity.

What is Disney Infinity?

So let's start with the basics.  What is Disney Infinity?  At it's core it is a video game.  Unlike most other video games, you can purchase a lot of extra accessories to go along with the game.  There are extra characters that you can purchase, as well as accessories for the characters to use.  You can also purchase play sets that add new levels to the video game.

What is the first thing I should purchase?

The most basic item that you need to buy to get started is the Disney Infinity Starter Pack (that link will take you directly to the Disney Infinity Starter packs listing on Amazon.com).  Here's the link for the Nintendo 3DS version, I'm not sure why it wasn't with the others.

Just pick out the starter pack for the system that your child has.  Out of all the Disney Infinity merchandise, the only thing that is specific to a certain game system is the actual video game.  Everything else works no matter what system that you have.  

This game is available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS.


Please note:  Make sure if you have a Nintendo Wii or a Nintendo Wii U that you get the correct version for your system.  It can be a little confusing.  The Wii version has a white border at the top of the box and the Wii U version has a blue border.

What is included in the Starter Pack?

Inside each starter pack is the game, the base, 3 play sets and 3 characters.  The three play sets included are: Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Incredibles.  The three characters included are: Sulley, Captain Jack Sparrow and Mr. Incredible.

Also included are online codes that you can enter on the official Disney Infinity website to unlock online content and content on your mobile device.

The starter pack also includes 1 power disc.  I'm not sure if all the starter packs have the same thing or if they are random.  I got a Dumbo the Flying Elephant in mine.

What is the base for? 

The base hooks into the second controller slot on the game system and is what reads the information in the character figures, play sets and power discs and puts them into the game.  The photo below shows the base with the play set piece from the starter pack as well as a Jack Sparrow power disc.  Whichever character your child wants to play as would go in the last spot on the base.

What are the power discs?

The power discs are extra accessories that are sold separately.  They are sold in packs of two and you have no way of knowing which two are in your pack.  They are random.  The power discs all do something different, for example the Dumbo power pack I got in my starter set adds the Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride into the Toy Box section of the game.  Other power discs can give the characters extra damage dealt to enemies or more defense.  Some of the power discs can transform the Toy Box section of the game to their specific theme.

To get started with Disney Infinity, all you need is the Starter Pack.  It has everything your child needs to get started with the game.  In future posts, I will cover all of the extras that you can purchase for Disney Infinity, like more play sets, new character figures and the power discs.
